Florida House Votes Down Motion To Take Up Weapons Ban With Parkland Survivors Present

With survivors of the Parkland shooting in the gallery, the Florida House voted down a motion to consider banning assault rifles like the one that Nikolas Cruz used to kill 17 people in the Valentine’s Day shooting of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

On February 20th, Democratic Representative Kionne McGhee asked the House to consider Bill HB 219, a bill that would ban assault weapons like the AR-15 used in the Parkland Shooting and large capacity magazines. While the bill was already under investigation by three smaller committees, McGhee said that the committee’s inactivity meant the bill would essentially be dead unless they moved to have it be considered by the House. “While this is an extraordinary procedural move, the shooting in Parkland demands extraordinary action,” McGhee told the House before the vote. “I ask that you keep this bill and the conversation about the solution to combat mass shootings alive.”

Watching during the vote were several teenage survivors of the recent shooting. These students were part of a student movement to march on the Capitol and arrived a day ahead of their peers.

McGhee’s motion was voted down 36-71 in the Republican-dominated house, and the students present were disappointed in the results of the vote. “It was just so heartbreaking to see how many [voters’] names were up there, especially after it was my school,” 16-year-old Sheryl Acquaroli told Anderson Cooper 360˚. “It seemed almost heartless how they immediately pushed the button to say no.” Acquaroli also opined that the next mass shooting committed with an AR-15 will be the fault of lawmakers: “They had a chance to stop it today. If there is another mass shooting [in Florida] it’s going to be their fault.”

The bill’s sponsor, Representative Carlos Guillermo-Smith, was similarly disappointed. He has been pushing for greater gun control since the shooting on Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub that killed 49 people in 2016. “Unfortunately, just five days after 17 people were gunned down at a Florida school, the Florida House just passed a bill that declares pornography a ‘public health risk,’” Representative Guillermo-Smith (below, center) told reporters from the Independent. “Basically, what they have determined is that these are the Republican priorities in 2018: Wasting our time with debate and legislation that declares porn as a health threat, meanwhile we can’t even get a single debate, vote, or hearing on anything related to assault weapons. That’s really sad.”

But neither Representative Guillermo-Smith or the survivors of the Parkland Shooting appear to be giving up. The teen survivors are organizing a “March for our Lives” on Washington, DC, scheduled to take place on March 24th. According to the group’s Facebook page, there are already satellite marches planned in over 15 cities, as well as one in England. The group is asking that “a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address these gun issues.”

“At the end of the day, the students at my school felt one shared experience – our politicians abandoned us by failing to keep guns out of schools,” group organizer Cameron Kasky wrote in an op-ed for CNN. “But this time, my classmates and I are going to hold them to account. This time we are going to pressure them to take action.” And, at a Tallahassee rally after the vote failed, 18-year-old survivor Diego Pfeiffer echoed Kasky’s optimism. “On great decisions in the past, there have been two sides and the good side always wins out in the end … This isn’t about school shootings, and this isn’t about … violence anymore, this is about hope. This is about moving forward with everybody. This is about you guys. This is about everybody here making a difference.”

8 Ways To Cheaply And Naturally Whiten Teeth

Your smile is the first thing someone notices about you. You wouldn’t want someone to think different of you because of your yellow teeth would you? People with white teeth are perceived as being healthier overall, and a first impression can go a very long way. This is especially true if you’re interviewing for a dream job. Not only will a white, winning smile look good for you, but it will also improve your confidence. But if maintaining your oral hygiene is becoming difficult, you might want to whiten your teeth.

Finding that special someone is no easy task. But according to a recent study conducted by Match.com, 71% of women say that they judge a man based on his teeth. Research has also shown that those who are applying for a job are 58% more likely to get the job and are 53% more likely to get offered an increased salary with whitened teeth.

Research has also shown that those who are applying for a job are 58% more likely to get the job and are 53% more likely to get offered an increased salary with whitened teeth.

With that said, if you want to whiten your teeth, you should practice oral hygiene. But if you know that’s not going to happen, try doing these cheap, but effective techniques.

Do Not Use Baking Soda: Many people have been told that using baking soda to whiten your teeth is beneficial. Despite this product being a multi-talented cleaner for households, it’s not something you should use for your teeth. Granted it will help remove stains from your teeth, but if you continue to use it, it will eat away at your enamel. Once your enamel is gone, your teeth will get darker.

Stay Away From Energy Drinks: The usual suspected drinks that stain the teeth are coffee, tea, and red wine. But you can also add energy drinks to that list now. They contain acids that have eroding effects that are the same as eating a citrus fruit. However, if you want to consume an energy drink, you can do it through a straw.

Keep Swapping Your Toothbrush: To whiten your teeth, you need to be constantly swapping out your toothbrush. Replacing it every three months, or when you see the bristles begin to bend or wear down. With bent and worn down bristles on a toothbrush, it no longer has the ability to get the plaque in deeper parts of your mouth.

Brush Your Tongue: Brushing your tongue won’t just give you fresh breath, but it can also help prevent staining as well. The bacteria that your tongue accumulates can lead to discoloring of your teeth. All you need to do get a soft toothbrush and do long strokes starting from the back of your tongue. After each stroke, rinse your toothbrush. By performing this, it will help remove the bacteria from your toothbrush without re-depositing it on your tongue.

Rinse Your Mouth With Apple Cider Vinegar: It may not be the most effective way to whiten your teeth, but it is a natural, organic way to maintain a healthy smile. The best way to do this is to mix water with apple cider vinegar and swish it around in your mouth for one minute

Eat Raw Veggies and Fruits: Not only are fruits and vegetables beneficial for your body, but they’re also good for your teeth. Consuming nuts, raw apples, carrots, and cauliflower will help remove the stains and plaque. Stains and plaque can lead to cavities.

Use Gel Trays: Whitening strips are a popular choice for people who are looking to whiten their teeth. But Beverly Hills Dentist, Dr. Arthur Glosman, is not a fan of them. Dr. Glosman says that whitening strips do not distribute the paste evenly. The strips cannot reach the gum line, and that’s where the teeth become the darkest. The better alternative is to use gel trays, which can reach the gum line.

Rinse With Water After Eating An Orange: Oranges are loaded with vitamin C, which has loads of health benefits. But this delicious citrus fruit contains acid that can chip away at the enamel of your teeth. This can cause your teeth to stain easier. The good news is that there is a simple solution. After consuming an orange, rinse your mouth with water to wash away the acid that is sticking to your teeth.

Forget Bora Bora, These Awesome Overwater Bungalows Are Much Closer

We’ve all had an idea and a vision of what paradise would be like. There are several places in the world that can give you that piece of paradise, with a heaven on earth feeling. Of those places, Bora Bora has long been regarded as a slice of paradise, with its crystal clear waters and picture-perfect views. Located in French Polynesia, it isn’t exactly a close destination for all.

Viceroy’s Bocas del Toro aims to emulate that experience by bringing paradise much closer to you. Located on the border of Costa Rica, it is an archipelago off the coast of Panama and is a much more reasonable traveling distance for North American residents seeking their own piece of paradise. The exclusive resort will be situated on the edge of a rainforest, with the only access being available by boat, seaplane, or helicopter. The area is best known for its “laid-back Caribbean lifestyle” and is home to a rich history. In fact, Christopher Columbus himself is said to be one of the “visitors” that came to the beautiful region.

The hotel group involved in the development of the luxury resort is Viceroy, who deliver “one-of-a-kind lifestyle experiences” in “some of the world’s most sought-after destinations”, as per their official website. They “redefine the very concept of boutique and luxury hospitality” and aim to bring precisely that to Bocas del Toro.

The paradise resort is set to include 186 guest rooms, 42 of which will be luxury overwater villas, much like they have in Bora Bora. Each villa will have its own private pool and direct access to the water and glorious scenery. The accommodations are complemented with eight onsite restaurants and lounges, numerous pools, spas, fitness centers, and meditation rooms. Available to you are guided eco-tours, bike rides, hiking excursions, and a habitat for water birds and endangered fauna known as the San San Pond Sak wetlands. The luxurious property is coupled with pristine surroundings that are sure to encapsulate the paradise feel you are seeking.

For those looking to get active during their stay, the property sits on 457 acres of land and offers three miles of private white-sand beaches that are perfect for those looking to sail, snorkel, and surf, along with a surrounding rainforest which is ready to be explored. Other activities available include cycling, hiking, and zip-lining, offering a wide range of activities during your stay. For those who are advocates of our planet, the resort will only be welcoming electric cars, landscape indigenous plants, and the property itself will be eco-friendly, powered by sustainable technologies.

All of this may seem like something out of a dream or your imagination. You may be wondering just how much an experience like this will cost you after all is said and done. Although the company has sent out a press release, reservation time and costs have yet to be revealed. To get an idea, a one-bedroom over-water suite at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora will cost you about $1,600 a night, while other similar accommodations from Malaysia to Mexico may cost you half of that. It’s definitely intriguing to find out where in that price range this resort may fall, but luckily, you still have a couple years to start planning your stay.

Aiming for a 2019 opening, the Bocas del Toro luxury resort is set to pave its way into the vacationing world, offering a piece of paradise that’s a little closer to home. With its turquoise waters, colorful beach towns, and interesting history behind it, the archipelago is destined to find a home in the hearts of travelers. Offering something for everyone, the majestic destination is certainly worth the wait and anticipation, as paradise inches closer to us all.

22 Photos Proving Our Grandparents Were Cooler Than Us

We often treat our grandmas and grandpas tolerably. Grandparents will be grandparents: they think Facebook is a kind of notebook. But we’re just helpless nestlings in comparison to them. Their life was harder, but they had fun anyway. And they didn’t care about Facebook.

“My granny’s on a farm. She smokes, wears pants, and does what she wants.” (1938)

“My grandpa could have become a meme hero if they’d had the internet in 1952.

“My grandpa (on the left) and his friends with beautiful strangers.” (1940s)

“My grandma and her mate during the Second World War.”

“My friend’s grandpa in California.” (1940s)

“My grandparents in 1945. They were married for 45 years and met again in heaven in June 2012.”

“Don’t mess with my granny from North Dakota!”

“My friend’s grandparents are going to a costume party.” (1954)

“I found this picture from the 1930s: my grandparents were good looking!”

“My granddad (on the left) looked like a hipster before it was mainstream.” (1950s)

5 Everyday Habits That Are Causing You to Gain Weight

You haven’t eaten fast food and candy for a long time, you exercise regularly, and you try hard to lose weight…but those extra pounds seem to just hang on. In fact, most people just don’t realize that their usual morning rituals can prevent them from getting the body of their dreams.

1. You sleep too much

With too little sleep, your body is more likely to produce the stress-response hormone cortisol which increases your appetite. However, oversleeping might not be much better for you either. According to a recent study conducted by PLOS One journal, sleeping more than 10 hours a night can lead to a higher body mass index. It’s no wonder that doctors recommend getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every day.

2. You get ready in the dark

Open the blinds or curtains immediately after waking up. One study in the journal PLOS One found that blue light waves from the early morning sun boost your metabolism and help your body wake up. Even 20 to 30 minutes of daylight is enough to affect your body mass index.

3. You don’t make your bed

It may sound strange, but it’s true. A study by the US National Sleep Foundation revealed that people who reported making their beds also reported better sleep overall. After all, healthy sleep is the optimal way toward a healthy weight.

4. You forget to weigh yourself

Researchers from Cornell University proved that daily weighing is a successful technique that encourages weight loss. The best time to step on the scale is first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Since you lose water weight overnight, you’ll get the most accurate number.

5. You eat too little for breakfast

Researchers from Tel Aviv University insist that you should pamper yourself with a delicious meal in the mornings. In fact, a balanced breakfast that contains 600 calories of lean protein, carbohydrates, and some dessert will make it easier for you to follow your daily diet plan.

10 Stories That Will Make You Believe in Fate

Sometimes we seem to end up in the right place at the right time as though in accordance with someone’s will, leading us to think that this is “simply fate.”

I moved to a new rented apartment. I’d been living there two weeks. One day, I decided to organize a spa day for myself. I smeared myself from head to toe in blue clay. Then someone walked in. I was standing there, naked as the day I was born, all blue like Avatar, and I meet the gaze of an incredibly pleasantly surprised man. I ran to the kitchen and picked up a knife. The guy picked up a spray bottle, and we started demanding who was who and why were they here. It turned out that it was his apartment, and it had been rented out to me by his grandma who dreamed of finding her grandson a wife. We still remember that day. And I still live there now: we live as one family.
There’s always one homeless guy hanging around near my house. He once came up to me and asked me for money for a lottery ticket. I didn’t believe that’s what he wanted it for, but I gave him some money. The next day he came back to me, gave me back my money, and said, “I’m indebted to you until I die! I bought a lottery ticket and won $250,000! Thank you!” I actually almost started crying. It was so nice that by giving him such a small sum, I had in some way helped him get back on his feet.

There’s a small square near to my house. I used to go for walks there with my sister on a regular basis. There’s a mysterious place there where mom met our father, and my sister met her husband. And today, I accidentally bumped into and knocked a guy over in the exact same place. I apologized and helped him get up. My whole family is now waiting for the wedding date.

A couple of days ago, our cat ran away. My husband said that he went away to die because he was already 13. I had to explain this somehow to my five-year-old son. Yesterday we were out for a walk. I’d already planned what I was going to say in my head, and then I heard my son say, “Mom, look!“ I looked, and in his hands was a copy of Freddie when he was a kitten. Now, the ”new” Freddie lives with us, and I told my son that our “old” cat still lived inside the younger version. Then my husband and I started thinking about it, and we thought maybe it’s really the case that cats have 9 lives, and for each one they return to their favorite owners, just in a new form?

I’ve been convinced once again that life loves to joke. My older sister had been dating her boyfriend for 5 years. They broke up, and then she married Alex. My brother dated a girl for 8 years. They broke up, and then he met a wonderful woman — also called Alex. I’d been dating a guy for 3 years. We broke up recently, and now I’ve just met another guy…can you guess what his name is?

I found out that my husband had a lover right at my wedding. I couldn’t control myself or hold back my emotions. I started sobbing and ran away. I went down into the subway and headed off somewhere. A girl in a huge wedding dress, crying, in the subway — naturally, I attracted a lot of sideways glances. And then a young man appeared, clearly aiming to lift my mood. He took me by the hand and led me out of the subway carriage, as though he was my groom. I’m now happily married to my new husband.

I understood that he was my fate when I found out that his father and grandfather were both called Alexander — just like mine were. And not willing to risk breaking tradition, we decided to also call our son Alexander.
I lived in Los Angeles until I was ten. I went to kindergarten there. My mom and aunt often told me later that I became good friends there with a little girl called Diana, and I even promised to marry her. Many years later, I was living in New York, and I got acquainted with a woman. Soon our friendship became a relationship. She was also called Diana, which I didn’t attach any significance to at first. Eventually, when we got to know each other much better, I told her the story about the girl in kindergarten. It turned out to be the very same Diana. We’re getting married soon. You have to keep your promises!

I lost my wallet. It had my ID, money, credit cards, and a photograph of my cat in it. A couple of days later, I found a phone on the bus. I phoned the mom of the person who’d lost it and agreed to meet with them to give it back. I arrived, and the guy was clearly very happy. He said that there were still honest people left in the world after all. I told him that I knew how it feels to lose something important, as I’d lost my wallet a few days earlier. And then the guy took a wallet from his pocket and asked me if it was mine. I opened it, and there was the photo of my cat! You can’t imagine how surprised we both were. All my money and cards were still there. Now the guy’s one of my friends. It’s not for nothing that fate led us to meet each other. Miracles really can happen.
My mom was diagnosed with cancer in the autumn. The doctors said she had little chance of survival. I sat by her bed in the hospital for hours on end, and my cat was left at home alone. I started taking the cat with me to see mom in the hospital. The first time I did this, my cat lay down on my mom and slept on her the whole day. In the morning, the nurse came to carry out a test and noticed the cat wasn’t breathing — she’d died. The day after that, we got the news that mom’s illness was receding, and her test results were very good. They said it was a miracle. My cat gave her life for my mom…there’s no other explanation.

What Will Earth Look Like in 1,000 Years?

One year ago in his speech at the Oxford University Union, the legendary Stephen Hawking proclaimed that humanity can only survive for another 1,000 years.

We at Bright Side wanted to know whether our future is doomed or bright, and so we compiled the most exciting predictions for a new millennium.

9. Humans will live for 1,000 years.

Billionaires are already investing millions of dollars into research on slowing or stopping aging completely. In 1,000 years, medical engineers could design remedies for each component that causes tissues to age. Gene editing tools are already here, which could potentially control our genes and make humans immune to disease.

8. Humans will move to another planet.

In 1,000 years from now, the only way for humanity to survive might be to establish new settlements in space. SpaceX has a mission to “enable humans to become a spacefaring civilization and a multi-planet species by building a self-sustaining city on Mars.” The founder of the company, Elon Musk, hopes to have the first launch of their spacecraft by 2022, with 4 flying to Mars by 2024.

7. We will all look the same.

© Nickolay Lamm

In his speculative thought experiment, Dr. Kwan hypothesized that in the distant future (more than 100,000 years from now) humans will develop a larger forehead, larger nostrils, larger eyes, and more pigmented skin. Scientists are already working on ways to edit genomes so that parents can choose the way their children will look.

6. There will be super-fast intelligent computers.

In 2014, a supercomputer carried out the most accurate simulation of the human brain to date. In 1,000 years from now, computers are predicted to match and overtake the computational speed of the human brain and solve tasks that take a normal computer a decade to solve.

In the new century, quantum computers will be helpful in developing more effective drugs and diagnoses, enhancing space exploration, and helping automobiles drive themselves. At the same time, quantum computing might pose a real threat to privacy and information security.

5. Humans will become cyborgs.

Machines can already enhance human hearing and eyesight. Scientists and engineers are developing bionic eyes to help blind people see. In 1,000 years from now, merging with technology might be the only way for humanity to compete with Artificial Intelligence.

Merging human minds with computers would create a superbrain that could perform complex equations and search the internet just by thinking.

4. Mass extinction is on the way.

The last mass extinction wiped out the dinosaurs from the face of Earth. A recent study revealed that the rate of extinction for species in the 20th century has been up to 100 times higher than would have been normal without human impact. According to some scientists, only the gradual shrinkage of the human population can help civilization to persist.

3. We will all speak the same global language.

The major factor that is most likely to lead to a universal language is the streamlining of languages. Linguists predict that 100 years from now 90% of languages will disappear due to migration, and those that remain will become simplified. A Tower of Babel scenario still seems unlikely though.

2. Buildings will assemble and disassemble on command.

In the future, humans are likely to be able to create a virtual world around them, using the concept of utility fog. The utility fog idea was introduced by Dr. Hall and represents a polymorphic material comprised of trillions of interlinked microscopic “robots” that can essentially create any shape.

1. Nanotechnology will solve the energy and pollution crisis.

1,000 years from now, nanotechnology will be able to clean up environmental damage, purify water and air, and capture the energy of the Sun. New materials will answer the need for new environmentally friendly and more efficient energy storage technology.

3 Safe Ways to Get Rid of Insects at Home

It’s very easy to get rid of insects using poisons, but it’s also quite dangerous — especially if you have children or animals.

Bright Side has collected tips to help you get rid of unwanted guests once and for all using very safe ingredients.

How to get rid of cockroaches:

Cut the onion into little pieces.
Mix the onion with the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate is another name for baking soda).
Put the mixture where the cockroaches are seen most of the time.
Repeat if needed.

How to get rid of ants:

Put a few pinches of cornmeal in places where ants will definitely take food and bring it to their nest. You will notice the results in a few weeks.

How to get rid of mosquitoes:

Put the oil onto a clean sponge.
Put the sponge in a jar, and close it for 24 hours.
Open the jar, and let the smell spread around the room.

The Differences Between Liking And Loving Someone

We’re not perfect when it comes to finding out whether or not if someone who’s sparked our interest should be a long or short-term investment. The world of dating and getting to know someone is so microwavable these days as many tend to rush into things in search of characteristics and attributes they look for in a mate but, with the ability to forget about the last with the help of social media and dating apps many have failed to realize the telltale signs of true love. Luckily, you have us to help you know the difference between someone liking you and genuinely loves you. Without further ado, check out the differences for yourself.

Smiling & Blushing

This might be the clearest sign in the world because you really don’t know what that special someone is doing or thinking while you’re not around but, if you find yourself blushing in your lonesome because of that specific someone you might want to consider if what you feel for them is love.
Unapologetically You

We can be real and admit that when we initially meet someone for the first time we attempt to put our best foot forward in order to woo those we’re attracted to and there’s nothing wrong with that. But, when you have the ability to be yourself and still receive the same love from your partner is when you know things are real.

Going Or Staying

Towards the beginning of a relationship, you and your significant other tend to spend nights on the town or discovering the city and having new experiences together, which is cool but, a prime example of true love is when you have the ability to do nothing at all with your partner and still have the time of your life.

A Little Jealousy

We’re sure we raised a few eyebrows with this one but, here us out before you jump to conclusions. In a relationship, a little bit of jealousy is to be expected and that’s good because that means that your significant other sees value in you and wants to protect that but, if they’re showing dangerous levels of jealousy, that’s not healthy whatsoever.

Looks

In all honesty, we’re all conscious of our physical appearance if we want to believe it or not and still, that’s perfectly normal and fine but, what many don’t realize when they’re with boyfriends/girlfriends after a substantial amount of time is that being conscious of your aesthetic tends to go out the window after awhile.

Spending Time

When you first kick it off with someone it seems like there isn’t a moment in the day that you don’t want to spend with them which is totally normal but in time as your relationship develops you encourage your partner to spend time with the people that care about as well even if it doesn’t include you.

Imperfections

At one point in time during the beginning of relationships, a lot of tend us to think of our significant others and perfect but, in time we come to find that that isn’t true or possible and take the good with the bad and accept them for their imperfections which is a sign of true love.

The Text Back

We think we’ve all been there when someone we’ve been wanting to talk to all day doesn’t text us back and we begin to become frustrated which is normal but, with understanding and in being secure you should know in your heart that just because your lover doesn’t answer you immediately is a sign of negativity.

Trust

Liking someone definitely doesn’t take too much effort or work but, when you love someone it can become an inner-battle and something that takes a lot of work in order to maintain, especially when trust is involved. If you have someone who’s willing to put in the work to love you, you probably have a keeper.

Anniversary

We’re not sure how many of you that have been with the person that counts the weeks, days, and months since your first date or first kiss but we find that type of behavior to be a little overbearing. When you’re truly enjoying someone’s company time seems to fly without either of you noticing.

Spending Time Pt.II

Spending alone time with your girlfriend/boyfriend, spouse, or significant other is a necessary part in any healthy relationship but, there comes a time in your life when you want to meet the people who helped mold your partner into the person they become and thank them for it.

Pluck Vs. Water

Buddha’s has had some of the greatest quotes in recorded history and the greatest relationship analogy of all-time. If you’re not letting our loved ones grow and come into themselves, we’re holding them back, thus plucking them from blossoming into their potential which is no sign of love in our book.

In Sickness & In Health

Personally, when we get sick we tend to quarantine ourselves from the rest of civilization for the health and safety of others but, if you have someone who insists on visiting while you’re not feeling so well and making sure you’re doing ok and getting better, they probably have genuine love for you.

Fight!

Once again, an occasional fight here or there while in the midst of a relationship is totally normal and isn’t a sign of a sinking ship but, if you lack communication in troubling times that’s not a positive sign but, if you’re able to come together and discuss your differences in time, you’re showing signs of maturity and love.

Commitment

When you like someone you’re definitely living in the moment and going with the flow of things but, when it comes to loving someone you can see yourself living out the rest of your days with them. You can notice this type of commitment through conversation quite easy if someone continuously mentions you in their future plans. Know the difference people between liking and loving, the signs are there, you just have to read them.

Bad Breath isn’t Good – How to Get Rid of It?

There are many people who will tell you in your face that you have bad breath. These people will be your friends and family. But there are many who will not care to tell you that. They will just walk away from you. They might also not remind you of your bad breath as you may get offended or feel hurt. Regardless whether anyone tells you or not, it is not good to carry bad breath around. You need to get rid of it.

There are many ways you can get rid of bad breath yourself without needing a dental intervention or a dentistry guide. Just be a little careful about you oral hygiene, make some extra efforts and in a few days’ time, you will be free from bad breath. Here are some steps you can take.

Be thorough with mouth cleaning: It all starts with traditional tooth brushing. The oldest and the most important part of oral hygiene is brushing your teeth. Brush at least twice a day and minimum for two minutes. Bad breath is primarily caused due to decay of food leftover and bacteria.
