A 5-Minute Workout to Relieve Severe Lower Back Pain


Lower back pain can be caused by many factors. Sometimes it is a symptom of a serious body dysfunction or sometimes it can be caused by making an abrupt movement, lifting up something heavy, overstraining your muscles or sitting in an uncomfortable position for a long time. If you feel unbearable pain that runs down your leg and into your foot, it’s always worth a try to do some exercises instead of taking medicine.

Things to take into account:
The aim of this workout is to release muscle spasms in the piriformis that are irritating your sciatic nerve.
Do these exercises slowly and don’t force yourself. If you feel severe pain when doing the workout, it’s better to stop and visit a doctor.
Hold each position for 30 seconds.

The initial position: sitting in a chair with your back straight and your bent knees perpendicular to the floor.

Put the affected leg on the other leg — the affected one should be parallel to the floor.
Put both your hands on the calf of the affected leg.
Slowly start bending forward using your upper leg as support and get as low as you can.
Drop your hands downward and hold this position for 30 seconds.
Slowly return to the initial position.
Repeat the exercise one more time with the other leg.

The initial position: lying on your back with your legs flat.

Raise the affected leg until it’s perpendicular to the floor and bend your knee.
Put your same-side hand on the bent knee and grasp your ankle with the other hand.
Try not to move your ankle while slightly pulling the knee towards the opposite ankle.
After you’ve felt the muscle stretch, hold the position for 30 seconds.
Return to the initial position and repeat the exercise with the other leg.

Raise your affected leg above the other one and place the foot outside the opposite knee.
Put the opposite hand on your knee and slightly start pulling it towards your chest.

Some people like to create new year’s resolutions, others like to set intentions. As we go through the craziness of the holidays, we often come out on the other end a little burnt out, a little tired, and ready for a week-long nap. How about a holiday from that holiday?

For many years this has been my experience, and I can bet you I’m not alone on this one. Often we forget to give ourselves permission to pause, and because of this, we crash after the festivities are over.

Then we are convinced to create new year’s resolutions. The allure of losing 10 pounds, or of sticking to a gym membership/workout routine is appealing. While these can be health-promoting resolutions, they can also create new stresses. Many of us who have attempted to stick to such resolutions end up calling it quits or falling off the bandwagon a few days, weeks or a couple of months in. The problem is we’re not giving ourselves permission to pause.

Treating Stress and Anxiety: How do I Give Myself “Permission to Pause”?
Treating stress and anxiety is challenging, especially for those of us who aren’t used to pausing. However, starting the new year with the intention for more self-care, or the intention to “pause” for at least 10 minutes a day, is a powerful way to begin building the habit.

Everyone’s “pause” may look different. Some might use this time to meditate, do a little yoga flow or write in a journal. Here are five easy ways you can give yourself permission to pause today:

MEDITATION/MINDFULNESS
Take ten minutes out of your day, whenever is convenient, and pop a 10-minute guided meditation on. If you’d prefer an unguided meditation, this is a favourite: sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground, or lie on your back. Put your hands on your belly and practice deep belly breathing. With every inhale the belly expands, and with every exhale it contracts towards your spine. Simply focus on how your breathing feels with each inhale and exhale. If you’d like, you can add a mantra: each inhale is “I am”, and each exhale is a word that resonates, i.e. “peace” or “love”.

WALK IN NATURE OR AROUND THE BLOCK
Take ten minutes and go for a walk. Simply moving and getting out of your regular environment can awaken the senses and give your mind some clarity. Take time to appreciate and notice your surroundings and really be present.

TAKE TIME TO JOURNAL
Having a journal is so practical, especially when it comes to releasing emotions. I find that writing down my thoughts and feelings releases some of the tension inside of me. However you can use your journal in whichever way you prefer. You can focus on listing what you’re grateful for, or you can use it to brain-dump the thoughts swirling around in your head keeping you distracted. Others use their journal to free-write. Just put your pen to paper and write whatever comes to your mind – no filter. This can be incredibly therapeutic.

QUICK YOGA FLOW
Do a quick yoga flow with 20 sun salutations, or throw yourself into child’s pose for 10 minutes. Whatever feels right for you in that moment. Focus on your breath – breathe deeply into your belly and be fully present in the experience.

CREATIVE EXPRESSION
If you enjoy drawing or painting, take time to do this. If you play an instrument or enjoy singing, make it a priority. Do something that allows you to express yourself and your creativity. So many of us suppress our creativity for practicality or out of fear of judgement. During creative expression we’re able to connect with what makes us truly happy and can learn more about ourselves. Let your artistic side fly – even if you don’t consider yourself an “artist”!

Permission is Essential for Success
Giving yourself permission to embrace pausing and self-care is critical. So many women would look at this list and feel selfish for embracing this alone time. Pausing is not selfish – in fact, it’s the exact opposite. Self-care activities allow us to replenish our energy stores. They improve our mood and make us more peaceful. This has a powerful impact on the way we live our lives, how we treat others and the amount of energy we have to spend time with the ones we love.

Self-care is not selfish; it’s self-respecting and completely necessary to be the best version of ourselves. We must honour our needs, recognizing that we thrive when we give ourselves a little love and allow ourselves to pause.

This time should be non-negotiable, and we should never feel guilty for embracing it. It’s a basic human need that so many of us overlook, but I say let’s make this new year one to remember. Let’s begin to embrace self-care. Let’s give ourselves permission to pause.

Scientists Say That Being Forgetful Is Actually A Sign You Are Unusually Intelligent

Having a fast or accurate memory recall is certainly something that comes in handy at school when you’re doing something like learning multiplication tables. It can also be useful in the workplace when you’re trying to remember someone’s name.

With that said, forgetting names or fun facts happens to the best of us. However, when it happens, it’s not unusual to feel slightly dumb for having had a brain lapse.

After all, there is nothing worse than going to the grocery store and forgetting the most important thing you went in for in the first place.

If, like the rest of us, you wonder why you sometimes forget seemingly easy things, the answer is that there is probably nothing wrong at all.

In fact, a study done by the Neuron Journal suggests that forgetting is actually a natural brain process that might actually even make you smarter at the end of the day.

A study by professors at the University of Toronto found that having a perfect memory might have nothing to do with your intelligence.

In fact, forgetting the occasional detail might even make you smarter.

Traditionally speaking, the person who remembers the most things is seen to be the smartest.

The study, however, found that forgetting the occasional detail is normal. In fact, remembering the big picture as opposed to little details is better for your brain and your safety, in the long run.

You see, our brains are actually a lot smarter than we think. Our brains are so smart that the hippocampus (where memories are stored) weeds out the most important details.

As CNN put it, this helps us to “optimize intelligent decision making by holding onto what’s important and letting go of what’s not.”

This theory makes sense when you think about how it’s more important to remember someone’s face than name.

Both might be ideal for social purposes, but if we were in the animal kingdom, remembering someone or something’s face as being a threat will keep us alive, as opposed to remembering their name.

The brain doesn’t just decide what is and important to remember, it actually retains new memories and overwrites old ones.

When a brain is too crowded with memories, they are more likely to conflict and interfere with efficient decision making.

Retaining “big picture” memories is becoming less and less important for us humans with improvements in technology and our access to information.

It’s more useful for us evolutionarily to know how to Google the spelling of a word, or how to install a shower head than it is for us to remember exactly how to do it.

By no means should anyone be forgetting everything, but it’s perfectly OK and healthy to overlook or forget a minor detail once in a while.

So the next time you forget something, just remember that it’s just your brain doing its job.

Obese Teenager Loses Half her Body Weight In Less Than A Year

Most of us will get to the stage where we decide we want to lose weight. Now, this may be anything from a few pounds to a considerable chunk of our overall mass, but it’s almost inevitable that we will decide to shed the pounds at some point.

But only in the most extreme cases would someone be in the position where they would aim to lose as much as half of their body weight.

Well, one morbidly obese teenager did manage to lose half of her body weight, and guess what – she did it in just 11 months!

On her YouTube channel, NoLongerFatJosie, Josephine explains in detail how she managed to lose 132 lbs in less than a year:

Josephine explains how she managed to transform her body beyond recognition in less than a year.

Seventeen-year-old Josephine Desgrand from Queensland, Australia used to weigh a whopping 270 lbs and was a size 20.

She is now so slender that both she and her boyfriend, 19-year-old Morgan Pascoe, can fit into her old jeans at the same time.

Josephine holds the large portion sizes she had grown accustomed to eating, and her lack of exercise on her extremely unhealthy weight.

So what made the Aussie teen decide to embark on a colossal weight loss journey? Well, she had been on the receiving end of constant bullying, and it was starting to take its toll on her emotional and mental health.

So the high school graduate made the very ambitious decision to completely change her diet.

Josephine started by cutting out sugar from her diet and dramatically reducing her carbohydrate intake.

Her new lifestyle brought her down from 270 lbs to 134 lbs and to a size 8.

“I’m a huge foodie. My portions were huge, and I used to eat so fast,” Josephine admitted. “Mom always used to tell me to slow down with my eating as I’d always be the first finished. I was also never interested in sport and would avoid it at all costs.”

“I have an amazing family and we’ve had some wonderful experiences, but I was so unhappy with my weight,” she said.

 

“I would avoid clothes shopping as I would have to go into the older stores like Millers, which made me so depressed,” Josephine added.

“I remember finding skinny jeans that actually fit me. I tried them on and felt fantastic until I saw a photo of me in them. I wanted so badly to lose weight, I just didn’t do anything about it.”

Josephine says she “went through cycles” of trying to alter her appearance, saying: “Then one day, I stopped thinking about it and just did it. It sounds so easy. I googled so many transformations; I researched how I was going to do it.

“I was prepared, I wanted it so badly, and now I was waiting for the ‘lightbulb’ moment when I wake up and want to go for a run, or I wake up and don’t have any sugar cravings.”

“I would look at my friends and be so envious of what they were wearing and what they could do.”

“I used to worry about things like not fitting in seats and having to ask for seatbelt extenders.”

“I cut sugar completely and reduced my carb intake. Sugar was the main thing. I tried many diets beforehand, but I never stuck to them. I did some research into sugar and was shocked at the amount of sugar I used to consume; it seemed to be in everything. ”

“Making the decision to cut it out of my diet was the best decision of my life. It was very difficult at first; the first two weeks were so hard, but pure determination saw me through. Then it became a habit.”

“I read an article the other day that said sugar is as addictive as drugs. That’s crazy, but I completely believe it.”

Josephine is a very inspirational young woman and deserves all the praise in the world for achieving something that, for many people, would be an unachievable feat. Hopefully, she will be able to continue her new lifestyle without reverting back to her old habits, because anyone who has lost weight will know just how easy that path can be.

12 Strange Diseases and Syndromes That Doctors Know Almost Nothing About

Imagine that you go to bed, and when you wake up, you realize that you have a completely different voice. These are not fantasies from a sci-fi book, they’re the real thing! These are medical conditions that are so strange, you might not have even heard of them yet.

Fibrodysplasia

This rare and serious genetic illness is characterized by the gradual ossification of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. As you can see in the photograph of the skeleton which belonged to a person who had fibrodysplasia, their body slowly gets covered with bone tissue. The illness leads to serious deformations, loss of the ability to move normally, and premature death.

At the moment, there are no effective preventive or treatment measures, but scientists managed to find the gene that is responsible for fibrodysplasia. Right now, the clinical trial of a drug to treat this disease is being conducted. The drug is supposed to stop the ossification process.

Ehlers—Danlos syndrome

This disease disrupts the synthesis of collagen which leads to: the fragility of blood vessels, over-flexibility of the joints, dislocations, sprains, tissue deformation and other dangerous consequences. The skin of those who have this disease is elastic and very susceptible to damage and scarring.

There are several variations of this syndrome — from moderate to severe (fortunately, the latter is very rare)and in cases where the disease doesn’t affect the blood vessels, it doesn’t really influence life expectancy. There is no treatment at the moment, but if a patient gets the right physiotherapy, it’s possible to decrease the negative effects of Ehlers—Danlos syndrome.

Encephalitis lethargica

Also known as “sleeping sickness,” but idifferent from the sleeping sickness that the tsetse fly transmits. Doctors believe it to be viral, but the exact virus has yet to be determined.

The disease is characterized by a high fever, sore throat, headache, weakness, tremors, and falling asleep anywhere. There is no actual treatment, so a sick person may either recover themselves, or the sickness may become chronic and last for decades.

The epidemic was first discovered in 1915–1917. Some researchers think Adolf Hitler had Encephalitis lethargica, which influenced his personality and his future decisions.

Cold urticaria

Cold urticaria is an inherited or acquired disease that’s characterized by a body reacting to cold with a rash. This happens due to abnormal levels of histamine, but the mechanism that causes the increase in the levels of histamine is unclear.

A symptomatic treatment (the only treatment there is): doctors recommend patients not to get cold, take anti-histamine medications, and put special creams on the face and hands before going outside for protection from cold.

Xeroderma

This genetic disease is also known as the vampire syndrome because a person, who has it, can’t be in the sunlight without severe consequences. The spots on the skin which were exposed to ultraviolet, become inflammatory. And this inflammation can lead to an oncology disease. Eyes are in danger, too.

If a person who has xeroderma needs to go outside in the daytime, they need to take all possible precautions. For example, the boy David Middleton, who you can see on the photo, had to wear a special suit to school and spend two hours every day to out the protective cream.

Foreign accent syndrome

The reasons why this syndrome appears are unclear, but it’s thought that it may appear due to a head trauma, stroke, or brain tumor. The person who has this syndrome can still speak their mother language, but their pronunciation changes so much that other people think that the person speaks with a foreign accent.

The disorder itself is not dangerous to the person’s health, but people say that they feel alien in their motherlands, and their lives become harder because of the misunderstanding and sometimes mockery from other people.

Hypertrichosis

Hypertrichosis is an overgrowth of hair in places where it’s not considered normal, for example, on the face. Most of the time, hypertrichosis is found in men, and rarely in women. Although, the creepy bearded women from the circuses of the past could have been affected with this disorder.

Innate hypertrichosis can’t be treated, but fortunately, nowadays there are a lot of ways to get rid of extra hair. Jesús Aceves, a Mexican actor affected with this disease, doesn’t think that having hypertrichosis is a tragedy and lives a full life.

This disease is caused by a build up silver sediment in the body. As a result, a person’s skin has a silverish or bluish color. The development of argyria happens in situations when people use a lot of products which contain silver, and it is especially common among people who work with this metal.

The most well-known person with this disease was an American man named Paul Karason who had the nickname “Papa Smurf” because he looked very similar to the cartoon character. He turned blue after he had been taking colloidal silver for a long time trying to treat his dermatitis.

Exploding head syndrome

“There is a noise that becomes louder and louder, then there is a sound of an explosion, and a bright flash of light, like someone turned on a flashlight and pointed it at my face.” This is how people who suffer from exploding head syndrome describe their symptoms. And this disease is actually not that rare. If you suffer often from insomnia and stress, there is a risk that you could experience this yourself.

Scientists think that this syndrome may be caused by neural activity in the parts of the brain responsible for sound. This leads to “the explosion” and the sensation that feels like an electric shock

Trimethylaminuria

This disease is also known as fish odor syndrome, and as you probably guessed, it leads to a person smelling like fish. The worst thing is that the person may not sense the smell, but other people do. This causes a lot of psychological problems and communication difficulties.

Unfortunately, there are no effective treatment methods, but according to the results of some studies, a special diet together with activated carbon and сhlorophyllin can decrease the fish odor.

Stendhal syndrome

“When I was leaving the Church of the Holy Cross, my heart started beating very fast, I felt like life was drained from me, and I walked with a fear of falling…”, this is the French writer Stendhal describing his feelings after visiting Florence. The thing that the writer experienced is a psychological disorder which presents with symptoms like rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, confusion and even hallucinations when people experience something that is of great personal significance like art, the beauty of nature, animals, or people.

It’s very odd, that tourists from Asia usually don’t have Stendhal syndrome, perhaps because their culture is very different. The same goes for the tourists from Italy, because they are more accustomed to being surrounded by beauty than other people.

Urbach—Wiethe disease

The patients who have this condition don’t have the amygdala in their brains which means that they are unable to experience fear. There were experiments done on a patient known as S.M. that showed that people affected with this condition are not afraid of snakes, poisonous spiders, horror movies, armed robberies, and other dangers.

The only thing that can make them experience something that can remotely be described as fear, is the inhalation of a high dose of carbon dioxide which would make any healthy person panic.

Woman loses 455 lbs in 2 years: Here’s what she looks like today after miraculous transformation

It’s easy to lose weight, but much more difficult to keep those extra pounds off.

Imagine being more than 200 lbs overweight and being unable to walk, swim or even stand up straight.

That was reality for Nikki Webster.

At 34, she weighed 600 lbs, and the situation was critical – she was dying.

Nikki’s unbelievable weight was caused by an addiction to food.

”My weight is debilitating. My body is so painful, I hate it. But I say this to myself. Food is an addiction to me and my addiction is killing me,” Nikki says.

The turning point came when Nikki was invitated to appear on TV show “My 600 lb Life.”

After realizing how dangerous her obesity was, she agreed to move from the state of Arizona to Texas so she could be closer to her physician, Dr. Nowzaradan.

He’s a doctor who specializes in weight loss in people who are morbidly obese.

Nikki hoped that weight loss surgery would be the answer to her problems, but it would require more than one surgical procedure.

The doctors told her that she had to lose at least 50 lbs on her own before they would perform an operation on her.

Nikki lost the weight in less than three months and was approved for a gastric bypass.

However, Nikki was worried that her bad habits would come back and make her gain weight again. She was also concerned about the risks involved with the operation.

”Earlier this year, my best friend Michael had a gastric bypass, and he died. That haunts me,” Nikki explained.

But Nikki bravely decided to go through with the operation.

It was a success, and the next year was an incredible journey: Nikki lost 200 lbs in 12 months! The before and after photos speak for themselves – today Nikki is a completely different person!

But in order to get to the root of her morbid obesity, Nikki needed to dig deeper.

She contacted a therapist to get to the bottom of her eating disorders and to make sure she didn’t fall back into old bad habits.

Nikki had some setbacks, which is very normal when it comes to weight loss and diet changes.

But after the doctor told her that she could undergo skin removal surgery to get rid of her excess skin, she became motivated to work even harder.

After losing an amazing 350 lbs, the doctor approved skin removal surgery. They removed 56 lbs of skin from her body.

Unfortunately, Nikki suffered from internal bleeding and returned to the hospital for a third operation. However, she recovered well and returned home after a few days.

Today Nikki weighs 194 lbs and continues to fight to maintain her new weight and healthy eating habits.

Nikki is a healthy and happy woman and feels better than ever. We have our fingers crossed that she stays that way!

8 Morning Habits We Should Say Goodbye to Once and for All

1. Not starting the day with a shower


Every day we face a series of questions (both work-related and others) we’re forced to answer throughout the day. Since hot water has a relaxing effect, taking a hot shower in the morning will make you want to crawl back into bed. Taking cold morning showers has a few advantages. It helps you feel refreshed, it stimulates brain activity and makes your immune system work harder. Cold water, unlike hot water, doesn’t make the skin dry, and according to scientists, people who take a cold showers regularly can lose about 9 lb a year.

3. Checking your phone for a long time


Social media is the main reason why so many people log onto their phones first thing in the morning. The way we spend the day depends on how we spend our morning. 6. Brush your teeth after food


After eating food, the enamel on your teeth becomes vulnerable, especially if you ate fruit, citrus, or drank soda thanks to the fact that they contain citric acid and phosphoric acid. What you should do instead, is wash your mouth out with water and remove the leftovers of the food with dental floss. Try to brush your teeth only 30 minutes after eating any food.

Black coffee right after waking up makes your cortisol levels high which leads to anxiety. And if you drink coffee when you’re hungry, you can get gastritis. Research shows that the best time for drinking your first cup of coffee is three or four hours after waking up. However, if you can’t resist drinking coffee in the morning, add a little milk or cream to it. This way you will decrease the harsh effects of the drink on the stomach.

8. Make the bed right away


When you make your bed right after you get up, you create a good environment for dust mites, because the moisture that your body left on the sheets during the night doesn’t have a chance to evaporate. Scientists recommend completely moving the blanket from the mattress after you wake up to let the sheets dry.
